EAT WELL

Eat Well Final Mockup.png

SUMMARY

We are interested in creating a mobile application that will help users find information about the foods they want to eat or can not eat. We want to create something that will be valuable to anyone who consumes food, with the primary focus of helping to improve the lives of people living with chronic conditions that limit their food intake; i.e. (people with special diets, food allergies, food intolerances, gastrointestinal conditions - Crohn's disease, IBS, celiac disease etc….)

TEAM

Our team is comprised of 3 members each providing unique advantages. I worked with UX/UI Designers Mel and Haley to create an ios mobile app keeping in mind these key features:

  • Minimalism and simplicity of UI design

  • Easy to use and find nutritional information with one scan or one click

  • The focus of helping to improve the lives of people living with a special diet and food intolerances

Timeline: 2 Weeks

OUR RESEARCH

We started with Proto-Persona and defined our hypothesis of this project:

  • We believe analyzing easy-to-understand nutritional information and building grocery lists with acceptable food recommendations will improve the lives of people with special dietary needs while helping them save their time shopping for groceries.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

As a way to gain insight and understand the potential market of this type of application, we conducted a competitor analysis. We found plenty of nutrition and fitness mobile apps designed the similar way as our ideas.  Our biggest direct competitor is the Shopwell app. Its main feature of barcode scanning stands out to us;  users can scan any food product, and read the breakdown of its nutritional information. They can also score the product scale 1-100.

SURVEY & USER INTERVIEW

We conducted both an online survey and an Instagram survey for our user research. We found some significant data and user insights:

IDEATION

As we completed our user research, we started the ideation and definition phrase. We use Affinity Diagram and I Like, I Wish, What If method. We then organized our ideas and digitize them using the Miro board.

VALUE PROPOSITION

After creating User Personas, we finalized and stated our value proposition to meet our goals:

  • “Eat Well helps those with special dietary needs to eat better and feel better without the need to do a ton of research on complicated ingredients.

  • Why we’re better: We educate individuals on hidden ingredients they may not realize are poor choices for their unique diet, send personalized grocery lists with acceptable foods, and help them discover reviews of food reactions from others in their community.

  • Why we’re believable: We’re a transparent, supportive health community enabling those who want to feel better and live healthier lifestyles.”

SKETCH & LO-FI PROTOTYPE

On the left is the sketch of the three main features of the app, and we converted it into digital Lo-Fi prototypes for initial our user testing.

STYLE GUIDE

This app is all about eating healthy, plan healthy and live healthily. And green color expresses a calm, relaxed, peaceful feeling, and is able to help people to restore their health. Therefore, we chose a green color as our primary color. The orange color and tomato red add the vitality and energy to the palette. And the teal color can balance the two together. The app informs the user what ingredient they want and should avoid, so we want to use a friendly tone but also a direct message for that. We need the involvement of the community which could provide these relatable reviews and comments. We also want this to be refreshing and simple to use.

FINAL THOUGHTS

User first -- especially when it could affect their health

Information architect  (IA) is important for informational apps

Be direct and transparent -- always use labels

There is a need for this app!

Some future opportunities would be to:

  • Enhance the scan feature by allowing users to scan a list of ingredients

  • Expand the “Eat Well” experience on a global level, allowing the integration of international foods

  • Partner with food brands or grocery stores to market their products within our app/shop feature

  • Automated grocery lists made based on personal dietary needs and preferences

  • Allow users to input information for unknown products as a way to notify the team of new items
